Crime Stoppers is celebrating its 50th anniversary, marking half a century of the anonymous tip-and-reward system founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1976 by Detective Greg MacAleese. Detective MacAleese was seeking help from the public regarding a robbery/homocide of a 20 year old. The term Crime Stoppers was developed from the Dick Tracy comics with their permission.

50th Anniversary Milestones

• Origin: The program was created in 1976 after MacAleese, a Canadian-born police officer, sought a way to solve a local homicide by offering cash rewards for anonymous tips.
• Global Growth: The concept has expanded into a worldwide network with over 1,000 chapters operating across the globe.
• Impact: For five decades, the initiative has empowered the public to bypass the fear of retaliation, leading to thousands of solved cases, countless arrests, and the recovery of millions in stolen property and narcotics.
